Wildlife has been one of my main interests throughout my life and remains my favourite subject for photography. It requires endless patience, a good understanding and knowledge of different species and usually very long, heavy telephoto lenses.
Unlike most other subjects, which are usually in a fixed position or can be posed, birds and animals are unpredictable in nature, making the capture of a good image very demanding and usually frustrating.
However, when you get the shot you are after, it is incredibly rewarding and worth the endless hours spent in a cold hide etc, waiting in vain for the subject to turn up when the varying light is good enough.
Even with the longest lenses, you still need to be very close to your subject to get a photo where the image is large enough to be useful and show plenty of pin-sharp detail. One wrong move or sound and the only photo you will get, is of your very wary subject disappearing over the horizon!
I have been asked to write several wildlife articles with photos for
Suffolk Journal and Norfolk Journal county magazines this year, which I am enjoying very much.
